American Structures & Design, Inc offers five different sizes of stainless steel cable for Cable Railing Systems: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8".
Cable Sizes & Guardrail Applications
1/8" - Can be used on horizontal railing where there is little public pedestrian traffic or where railing is not required to meet codes. Great on vertical railings.
3/16" - Quite satisfactory for pedestrian railings. Relatively small diameters minimizes visual obstruction.
1/4", 5/16", 3/8" - Diameters larger than 3/16" can be used where a larger diameter is desirable from a visual/aesthetics stanpoint or where the application calls for a higher breaking strength.
Cable Construction
Our recommended cable for most applications is 1x19 construction, type 316 stainless steel cable. Other construction can be used, such as 7x7 or 7x19, but they are rarely recommended because of their elevated levels of stretch versus 1x19 construction cable, which is very rigid. Cable can be special ordered with PVC coating or 7x7 and 7x19 construction.
